When you stay up too late and feel like a zombie the whole next day, the struggle is beyond real. But from a basic ballet move to a quick and energizing skincare routine, these seven tips will help you wake up and feel fab all day.
1. Get moving.
For a quickie routine that won’t cause you to sweat a ton and make you hit the shower, channel your inner ballerina and plié. You’ve seen this move a million times — just stand with your legs shoulder-width apart and toes pointed outward, then bend your knees until they extend a little past your toes. Come back up and do three sets of 12. Not our fault if you decide to wear your hair in a ballerina bun that day.
2. Use an exfoliating scrub.
“Set your alarm five minutes early twice a week and make them your scrub days,” suggests New York-based dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D.. “Removing dead skin cells reveals fresher, brighter skin, and also allows your [skincare] products to sink in better.” For a deeper cleanse, try an exfoliating scrub with 100% natural exfoliants like St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub. If you’re prone to breakouts, try a scrub that is made with salicylic acid, which will help clear blackheads and calm redness.
3. Become one with vitamin C.
Drinking OJ in the morning wakes you right up, and vitamin C can do the same for your skin. Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D., suggests applying topical vitamin C to keep skin looking awake and glowy. Try a cleanser like Murad Essential C Cleanser or spike your moisturizer with a few drops of vitamin C serum.
4. Switch to warm water.
“Using warm water [when you’re washing your face] elevates your skin’s temperature and causes blood vessels to dilate, bringing more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the surface,” explains Zeichner. Translation: It will give you a subtle rosy flush. Skip it though, if you’re dealing with rosacea, since heat can trigger flare-ups.
5. Try a weekly mask.
If you’ve spent every night this week studying for a big exam but don’t want to look the part, try a weekly mask that helps your skin look recharged. St. Ives Nourished and Smooth Oatmeal Scrub & Mask is thick and creamy enough that it won’t drip down your face as you make breakfast or wash your hair for the first time in a week. After 5 to 7 minutes, you’ll have softer, smoother, more ~glowy~ skin that makes makeup go on like butter.
6. Make an on-the-go brekkie.
It’s easy to skip breakfast if you’re already running late, but being hangry can really screw up your mood. For a quick on-the-go meal, just blend some greens and fruit together (or whatever’s in the fridge) and drink it on the way to lecture.
7. Spray constantly.
Just like you need to drink water to stay hydrated, your skin requires constant quenching, too — especially if you’re sitting in a dry classroom all day. Leave a facial spray like Caudalie Beauty Elixir in your locker so you can give yourself a burst of moisture between classes.
